Atlantic City, WY - Let mountain air brush your cheeks and comb your hair as you stroll past historic gold mines. In the spirit of European noncompetitive hikes through gorgeous country settings, the American Volkssport Association has sanctioned Miner’s Delight Inn Bed & Breakfast owners Barbara and Bob Townsend to add two Volksmarches to the state’s list of 2008 events. This will make four accredited events in Wyoming's Wind River Country. The new seasonal walks will be available between May 28 and September 30, 2008.
Volkswanderung, German for “people’s walk,” began more than four decades ago to promote health and fellowship. The walks are not races, and they are designed to accommodate walkers of all athletic abilities.
Barbara and Bob offer a $20 discount to Miner’s Delight Inn B&B guests (http://www.minersdelightinn.com) who stay three nights if they complete the inn’s two events and the Volksmarches at South Pass City State Historic Site and Sinks Canyon State Park. Walkers should wear good shoes and a hat, carry water and snacks, and consider the near-8,000-foot elevations as they stroll in the Wind River Country’s high-altitude beauty.

On the Trail of the SheepEaters
Valid from 06/01/2008 to 06/30/2008 (Summer)
On the Trail of the SheepEaters
This archaeological horse-packing trip to goes to Whiskey Mountain in the Fitzpatrick Wilderness of the Wind River Range. Taylor Outfitters and archaeologist Rich Adams will record several known Mountain Shoshone sites and stone artifacts, gather wild edible plants and cook bighorn sheep meat in steatite cooking vessels for part of the meals. We will be re-creating scenes that have not been seen in the Rocky Mountains for at least a hundred and twenty-five years. We will have some of the most knowledgeable people in this field as resources in an informal outdoor setting.
The SheepEaters, a branch of the Mountain Shoshone culture, made their home and lived in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. In years past, little was understood about this culture, but today's evidence shows them to be an unique and thriving people. We will explore the area where this culture centered its life around the magnificant Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. SheepEater wickiups constructed by these Native Americans are still visible. Research into how the technology and tools of these early mountain people is revealing new information every year. This SheepEater home is now recognized as an ancient wildlife and human migration route in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Abundant diversity of wildlife is still seen regularly and native fisheries are prolific along the way.
The location of the trip's camp will be a breath-taking high elevation site in the Wind River Mountains at about 10,000 feet. During the trip, we will read accounts about SheepEaters by Osborne Russell, Lewis and Clark and other explorers to understand their insights into this native culture.
When packing please try to minimize your gear as much as possible, "think light and compact with layers" as we try to minimze our impact on Yellowstone's backcountry camp sites by limiting the number of pack animals needed for each trip. Participants furnish their own sleeping bag, pad and personal gear and will be given a gear list upon booking with Taylor Outfitters.
We plan to meet for the packtrip at the Whiskey Creek trailhead. Directions are: take Hwy 26/287 four miles east of Dubois, then turn and take the Trail Lake Road south for 3 miles to Whiskey Basin. Follow the road left past the Bighorn sheep kiosk and around the meadow. As the road starts to climb the hill, turn right to follow the route around the big meadow past a metal barn. Go about a mile on that road and then turn right on the Whiskey Creek trailhead road and we will be along the creek saddling up the horses.
We provide all meals, camping supplies and equipment except for your sleeping bags, pads and personal gear. We will plan on a wide array of meals for the trip, but if there is something in particular that you would prefer, please don‚t hesitate to contact us about it ahead of time. We offer great gourmet campfire meals and we would be glad to accommodate any specific dietary requests. The campfire possibilities are endless and fun.

Along the way there will be time for doing the things we all love ˆ natural history interpretation of Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, artifact hunting, swimming in cold streams and lakes, photographing awesome scenery, fishing for wild trout and generally having fun with other archaeology buffs. The Sheepeater or Mountain Shoshone Indians were residents of the Teton Wilderness and Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Their artifacts are still found in the areas where they summered along the Continental Divide. The SheepEaters, a branch of the Mountain Shoshone culture, made their home and lived in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem.
