On July 14, 2006, YellowstonePark.com's Ryan Johnson discovered one of the best ways to see Yellowstone country – by hot air balloon – during the 26th annual Riverton, Wyoming Rendezvous. Every year, Riverton hosts a Balloon Rally that attracts dozens of balloon operators from all over the country. I had the opportunity to take my first balloon ride and see the beautiful landscape of Wind River Country from 600 feet up! This is truly a spectacle from the ground as well. Other events that occur during these 10 days are a rodeo, a car and bike show, and fireworks just to name a few. Listen to the end of the podcast and you will hear three of us "first-timers" become christened during a ceremony following our flight. Thanks so much to my pilot Ed Potthoff for the flight!
File Download (41 min / 13.98MB)

There are many communities in Yellowstone Country that are on the way to the Park. In particular, Dubois, Wyoming, located near the South Entrance, takes pride in its relaxing setting and excellent hospitality. Though a small Wyoming town, Dubois has abundant activities and recreation and is a perfect base camp to explore from. Every Monday and Thursday throughout the summer, the Dubois/Wind River KOA hosts a chuckwagon dinner show featuring home-cooked cuisine and authentic cowboy music by the Prickly Pair. Be sure to make it to one of these events for great food and great entertainment in a gorgeous setting!
File Download (15:05 min / 5.18MB)

Everyone has heard about the mountain men and explorers who trekked across the Yellowstone region. But did you know that you can still attend a real mountain man rendezvous on your trip? Well you certainly can at the 1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous in Riverton, Wyoming. YellowstonePark.com's Shelli Johnson and Ryan Johnson had the opportunity to talk with local mountain men and even got to participate in some activities. This was definitely a learning experience as everyone involved was more than helpful in explaining the history behind rendezvous and the tremendous significance of the site itself. The 1838 Rendezvous is held on the same grounds that famous mountain men like Jim Bridger and Jedediah Smith congregated with others. This rendezvous has something for everyone from black-powder shooting, knife and tomahawk throwing, and seminars to learn the ways of the mountain man. It's a must for any enthusiast of the Old West!
File Download (74 min / 25.40MB)

The Yellowstone Region has an abundance of Native American culture. Specifically, within Wind River Country is the Wind River Indian Reservation, which is home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes. During the fourth week of June every year is the Eastern Shoshone Indian Days, the largest Native American celebration in the state. I had the opportunity to attend the 47th annual celebration on June 23rd. Along with the largest powwow in the state and drum groups and dancers from dozens of other tribes, there are also vendors selling authentic jewelry and crafts. This is definitely the best opportunity to explore Native American heritage and culture!
File Download (17 min / 5.64MB)
